Anthony M. Mele, Captain
Born and raised in Orange County, New York Anthony Mele was hired by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Officer in 1990. Anthony became a Certified New York State Peace Officer upon graduating from the New York State Peace Officer Academy in Albany New York, and he is also a graduate of the Orange County Police Academy. Anthony served on the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.) holding several leadership positions including Squad Leader, Assistant Team Commander and Team Commander. During his tenure with the Sheriff’s Office through Civil Service Examination he has held the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and currently serves as Captain. Anthony served on the team that achieved this Agency’s first accreditations with the American Correctional Association Standards and the New York State Sheriff’s Association and then took the leadership role of oversight in achieving additional accreditations. In his current position of Captain, Anthony is responsible for all levels of compliance as mandated by law and further in maintaining the strict accreditation standards that are continually examined and renewed. He oversees the inspections and assures that the Sheriff’s Office maintains compliance with all New York State Minimum Standards, Federal Detention Standards, American Correctional Association Standards and the New York State Sheriff’s Association Standards. Captain Mele also serves as the PREA Coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office. As PREA Coordinator his duties are to insure policies and procedures meet the guidelines set forth by the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act. He is also responsible for the investigation and reporting of any claims of misconduct governed by the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
