In June 2005, the Orange County Legislature approved the formation of a Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) under the Department of Health. In the event of a large-scale public health emergency, the MRC will supplement Orange County Public Health personnel resources with volunteer medical and mental health professionals from the community. In August 2009, the Orange County MRC became a registered unit in the Federal MRC program under the Office of the Surgeon General.
The volunteer health and mental health professionals that are recruited in the Orange County MRC would be mobilized to assist the OCDOH during a public health emergency in the county. The role of the volunteers would be to assist the OCDOH in the mass distribution of antibiotics, antivirals, and vaccine to the general public. Some of these distribution activities might include writing prescriptions, dispensing medications, conducting vaccinations, providing mental health support and assisting with triage. Non professionals having a myriad of skills (clerical, translators, interpreters, etc) will also be needed to complete the MRC team during a Point of Dispensing (POD) clinic.
Now, more than ever, it is essential for the safety of our communities that we are prepared for any natural or man-made emergency. As individuals, we all need to take an active part in helping to make our county stronger, safer, and better prepared. Volunteers will be screened to determine their unique qualifications and to match their skills to the appropriate position.
