Per Diem Autopsy Assistants
MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE
AT THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
Applications are being accepted by the Orange County Department of Health for per diem Autopsy Assistants. Per Diem employees are assigned to work on an as-needed basis to fulfill weekend, holiday, or shift assignments. Employment will not exceed 19 hours per week.
An incumbent in this class assists a pathologist in the conduct of autopsies by performing body dissections on cadavers of cases legally approved for autopsies by utilizing appropriate techniques, equipment and precautions for the purpose of obtaining a pathological diagnosis. Responsibility also involves the cleaning and maintenance of autopsy equipment and areas. Assignments are received from the Director of Operations (ME) and work is performed under the general supervision of a Pathologist who directs the incumbent during autopsies. Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. Routine travel is a requirement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s degree in health, forensic science, biochemistry, or related field; OR
(B) Completion of 60 college credits from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees and two (2) years of experience involving post-mortem examinations; OR
(C) Graduation from an accredited college or technical school or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an applied science degree in mortuary science or related field and three (3) years of experience involving post-mortem examinations; OR
(D) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience involving post-mortem examinations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid driver's license.
Starting Salary: $20.7280/per hour
The successful candidate will be subject to a background investigation, including a Criminal History Record Check.
CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION IS NOT A REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT
